Five Birthday Celebrations

On a more personal note, January 30th happens to be my birthday and obviously it was a beautiful day with a hike and a great zodiac ride. My mom and I were invited to dinner with 3 other couples with expedition leaders Matt and Lisa. It was great to talk to them in depth about what we were seeing. At the end of dinner, Matt looked around the table and asked, “can anyone who has a birthday today raise their hands.” To my total amazement, four of us raised our hands! The staff then came out and sang to all of us and presented us with a cake.

That evening, I read that we missed one very important member in the birthday celebrations. On January 30, 1820, Edward Bransfield, of the British Royal Navy, who was exploring the South Shetland Islands first sighted the Antarctic Peninsula.

Happy Birthday Antarctica!
